The Taj Mahal Palace Mumbai — the original, beside the Gateway of India
India's most famous hotel: the 1903 Palace on Apollo Bunder, with the Gateway of India across the road and the adjoining Taj Mahal Tower. Book it when the hotel is the point of the trip — a milestone, a senior guest, a Mumbai you want to remember.
The Taj Mahal Palace opened in 1903 and is the building that stands in for Mumbai in most people's minds: the domed Palace on Apollo Bunder, with the Gateway of India across the road and the harbour in front. Taj now lists the Palace and the adjoining 1973 Tower as separate hotels; this page is the Palace — 243 rooms and 42 suites, the heritage wing, the Crystal Room and the ballroom.
It suits the trip where the hotel is the occasion — a milestone anniversary, a family gathering, a visiting chairman; companies hosting a reception or a board dinner that wants the Crystal Room or the ballroom; and first-time visitors to Mumbai who want Colaba, the art district and the Gateway on foot.
What it isn't: an efficient business base for anything north of Fort. Nariman Point is ten minutes, but BKC and the airport are an hour or more, and the Palace rates reflect the building. For a plain Nariman Point working week, the Trident is the practical choice; for the Taj experience at a lower rate, the Tower wing next door.
Apollo Bunder is the southern tip of the city, and the Palace is the landmark on it. Colaba Causeway, the Kala Ghoda art district and the Fort business area are on foot; Nariman Point is a ten-minute drive; the Sea Link, BKC and the airport are a different journey.
Distances that matter
- Gateway of India: Across the road
- Kala Ghoda / Jehangir Art Gallery: About 10 minutes' walk
- Fort / Bombay Stock Exchange: About 10 to 15 minutes by car
- Nariman Point offices: About 2 km — 10 minutes
- Churchgate / CSMT stations: About 10 to 15 minutes by car
- Bandra Kurla Complex: About 22 km — 45 to 75 minutes
- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport: About 30 km — 60 to 90 minutes, traffic depending
Getting there
The Palace entrance is on Apollo Bunder, facing the harbour. From the airport, the Sea Link to Worli and then the coast road is the usual route, an hour on a good day; the Coastal Road shortens it when open. A hotel car at arrivals is worth booking for a first visit — tell us the flight and we'll add it.
Rates vary by season, day of week, and availability. WhatsApp us your dates for a firm quote within the hour. All rates GST-extra and include ITC-compliant invoicing.

The specific things we do for this hotel
- The right wing, the right room. Palace or Tower, sea-facing or city-facing, heritage room or suite — the difference in experience and rate is large, and the booking sites blur it. We ask what the trip is for and book the specific room category, then confirm it in writing.
- Occasions handled as one booking. For a family gathering or a corporate reception we quote the room block and the venue together — Crystal Room, ballroom or a private dining room — and manage the rooming list, so the organiser deals with one person.
- GST invoicing done right. We take your company's legal name and GSTIN at booking so the invoice is issued correctly first time. At this rate level the stay falls in the 18% GST slab, which a GST-registered company can claim back.
- One person through the stay. An early arrival off an overnight flight, a cake for an anniversary, a late checkout for an evening departure — you message one person who already knows the booking.
Nariman Point, about 2 km
Trident, Nariman Point Mumbai
The practical business hotel for a Nariman Point working week, with the Marine Drive view.
Nariman Point, about 2 km
The Oberoi Mumbai
The other great South Mumbai luxury address — contemporary rather than heritage, on Marine Drive.
They're adjoining buildings on Apollo Bunder, now listed by Taj as two hotels. The Palace is the 1903 heritage building with 285 rooms and suites, the galleries and the Crystal Room; the Tower is the 1973 wing beside it, with more contemporary rooms at a lower rate and the same address. We book both — tell us which experience you want.
About 30 km — an hour on a good day, up to 90 minutes at peak. For an early international flight, allow the full time or ask us about an airport hotel for the last night.
Yes. The Crystal Room is about 7,392 sq ft for up to 530 theatre-style, the ballroom 5,335 sq ft, with smaller rooms for board meetings and private dinners. We quote the venue and the rooms together.
Usually within about 5% for the same room type on the same date — sometimes a little higher, sometimes lower. What you get with us: the right wing and room category confirmed in writing, a proper GST invoice, and one person accountable for your stay.
Check-in is 2 PM and check-out is 12 noon. For an overnight international arrival, tell us your landing time and we'll ask the hotel to hold the room from the previous night; if there's a charge we'll tell you before you confirm.
