Chapter One

Notes from us, on Vietnam

Things we’d tell a friend before they booked. Specific, opinionated, occasionally inconvenient.

i.

North, centre and south have three different weathers.

Hanoi is cold and grey in December–January; Da Nang has its rainy season October–December; the south is dry November–April. A Hanoi + Da Nang + Saigon trip has no perfect month — February to April is the compromise. Tell us your dates and we will tell you which half of the country to prioritise.

Diwali week: Da Nang is wet. Go Hanoi + Phu Quoc instead.

ii.

Da Nang is the Phuket replacement — with better hotels for the money.

The My Khe / Non Nuoc beach strip is wall-to-wall international brands, and a five-star here costs what a four-star costs in Phuket. Stay on the beach strip, not in the city. Hoi An is a day trip or a one-night add-on, not a base, unless you want zero beach.

Golden Bridge opens 7 am — go first thing, before the tour buses.

iii.

The e-visa is easy but not instant.

India isn’t on Vietnam’s visa-exemption list; everyone applies online for a US$25 e-visa. It takes 3–5 working days and the form rejects passport-name mismatches, which is the most common reason trips get delayed. Apply two weeks out; we send the correct link and field guide with the booking.

Phu Quoc alone (no mainland stop) is visa-free for 30 days — handy for a short honeymoon.

Chapter Five

Before you book Vietnam

Do Indians need a visa for Vietnam?
Yes — an e-visa applied online (US$25 single entry, valid 90 days, 3–5 working days). The only exemption is Phu Quoc island, visa-free for 30 days if you fly directly there and do not visit the mainland.
Vietnam or Thailand?
For the same budget you get a better hotel in Vietnam, and it is less crowded with Indian groups. Thailand wins on nightlife, visa-free entry and sheer choice of flights. First trip abroad: Thailand. Second: Vietnam.
Is it vegetarian-friendly?
More than people expect — Vietnamese food has a strong Buddhist-vegetarian tradition (look for “chay”). The big hotels in Da Nang and Hanoi have Indian options on request; HCMC and Hanoi both have Indian restaurants. Jain requests must be in the booking.
When is Da Nang’s beach season?
February to August. October to December is wet and the sea is rough. If your dates are fixed in Q4, we will steer you to Phu Quoc or Hanoi instead.
