What’s on the OMR

The Old Mahabalipuram Road — officially Rajiv Gandhi Salai — is Chennai’s IT corridor, running south from the city for 25 km. At the top end, Tidel Park at Taramani and the Perungudi and Thoraipakkam campuses; in the middle, Sholinganallur and the campuses along the toll road; at the far end, SIPCOT Siruseri and Kelambakkam, where the largest campuses are. Trips here are office visits, project stays, training batches and the vendor meetings that fill the hotels on weekdays.

The important thing: the OMR is a line, not a place. Tidel Park to Siruseri is 20 km and up to fifty minutes, and the corridor has no metro. Tell us the campus, not the road.

Three ways to choose

Top end. The Westin Velachery and the Vivanta for Tidel Park, Taramani and Perungudi — close to the city as well.

Middle. Holiday Inn, Novotel OMR, Four Points, Fairfield and ibis for Sholinganallur and the Expressway campuses; the volume choices for project teams.

Far end. Novotel SIPCOT at Siruseri, and nothing else worth the commute.

The weekend after

The East Coast Road runs parallel to the OMR a few kilometres east, and the beach resorts on it — Taj Fisherman’s Cove at Covelong, the Sheraton Grand towards Mahabalipuram — are 30 to 60 minutes from the corridor. Project teams finishing on Friday often move there for the weekend; companies run offsites there with the OMR offices a short drive away. We book the campus week and the beach weekend as one trip.

Common questions

At the top end of the OMR — the Westin Velachery or the Vivanta on the IT Expressway are ten to twenty minutes from Tidel Park and the Taramani and Perungudi campuses, and close enough to the city for an evening in Adyar or Alwarpet.

At Siruseri. The Novotel SIPCOT is beside the park; everything else on the OMR is 30 to 50 minutes north at peak, and the city hotels an hour or more. For a week at Siruseri there is no sensible alternative.

It depends where on the OMR. Velachery and the top end are 30 to 45 minutes; Sholinganallur 40 to 60; Siruseri an hour or more. The route runs via Velachery and Pallavaram or the Tambaram side; there's no metro to the corridor yet.

Not yet — the OMR line is part of the next metro phase, still under construction. The nearest working stations are on the Blue Line at Guindy and Little Mount, or the Green Line at St Thomas Mount, all at the city end of the corridor.

Yes. For 10 or more rooms we collect group quotes from hotels near the right campus, with meeting space if you need it, and handle the rooming list and GST invoicing in your company's name. For an offsite, the ECR resorts are 30 to 60 minutes from the corridor.
