Chapter One

Notes from us, on wildlife

Things we’d tell a friend before they booked. Specific, opinionated, occasionally inconvenient.

i.

Hotel location decides which safari zone you can access.

Most national parks have multiple gates and zones. Your hotel’s location determines which zone your safari starts from — and which zone has better tiger sighting probability that season. This is a real decision, not a marketing one.

Ranthambore: Zone 3–5 are gold — pick hotels near them. Bandhavgarh: Tala zone hotels for core access.

ii.

Safari permits are separate from hotel booking.

Even at top wildlife lodges, the safari permit is a separate booking with the Forest Department. Hotels can arrange them but only if you book in advance — sometimes 30+ days. Walking up at the lodge and asking for tomorrow’s safari often doesn’t work.

We coordinate hotel + safari permit together if you tell us the park and dates upfront.

iii.

Season hugely affects sighting odds.

Most Indian national parks close during monsoon (July–September). Pre-monsoon (April–June) has the highest tiger sighting odds because animals concentrate at waterholes. October–December is comfortable but greener — more cover, lower sightings.

Tiger peak season: April–June (hot but high odds). Comfortable: Nov–Feb. Monsoon-open: Tadoba year-round.

Safari is about access

The right side of the park matters. So does the safari permit.

Most parks have multiple entry zones — some with much better tiger density. We know which lodge sits next to which zone.
