Phuket or Krabi? — choosing your Thai beach
They face each other across the same bay, share the same weather and the same visa-free entry, and still give completely different holidays. Phuket is the island with everything; Krabi is the coast with the cliffs. The right answer depends on who's going.
The short version
- First trip to Thailand, family, group of friends, want choice → Phuket.
- Honeymoon, scenery, quiet, happy with one resort and a boat → Krabi.
- Seven nights or more → both, Phuket first.
Getting there
Phuket has non-stop flights from Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru, four to four and a half hours. That alone decides most family trips. Krabi’s airport has no India non-stops: you connect in Bangkok, or land in Phuket and drive about three hours around the bay to Ao Nang. Both countries’ entry is the same — Indians are visa-free for 30 days, with the free Digital Arrival Card filed within 72 hours of landing.
Phuket: the island with everything
Phuket is big enough to have several different holidays on it, and the beach you choose is the decision.
- Patong — nightlife, markets, the loudest beach. Fine for a group of friends, wrong for a honeymoon or a family.
- Karon and Kata — the family middle: long beaches, calmer water, resorts with kids’ clubs. Le Méridien Phuket Beach Resort has its own cove between Patong and Karon and is the family resort we book most.
- Kamala and Surin — quieter, hillside resorts; the Hyatt Regency at Kamala has every room facing the sea. Couples.
- Mai Khao — eleven kilometres of near-empty beach near the airport. The JW Marriott here is the calm honeymoon-or-family choice on an island that can be anything but calm.
- Tri Trang / Merlin Beach — ten minutes from Patong without being in it; the Phuket Marriott Merlin Beach is experienced with large Indian groups.
Days out: Phi Phi by speedboat, Phang Nga Bay, the Big Buddha, an ethical elephant sanctuary, the Old Town for an evening. Everything is bookable from the hotel.
Krabi: the coast with the cliffs
Krabi is a mainland coast and a scatter of islands, and the limestone cliffs are the point of it.
- Ao Nang — the base town: the beach, the restaurants, the boats. The Centara Grand and the Holiday Inn Resort sit on the beach here and suit families with older children.
- Railay — reachable only by longtail boat, cliffs on three sides. Rayavadee is the famous resort; it’s the honeymoon Krabi people picture.
- Klong Muang and Tubkaek — the quiet resort strip north of Ao Nang. Dusit Thani and Sofitel at Klong Muang; Phulay Bay, the Ritz-Carlton Reserve, at Tubkaek for the once-in-a-lifetime version.
Days out: the four-islands longtail trip, the Hong islands by speedboat (the best island day in the country), Phi Phi from the other side, the Tiger Cave temple, Emerald Pool. Evenings are quiet; that’s the trade.

Krabi, usually. Railay's cliffs and Tubkaek's quiet resorts — Rayavadee, Phulay Bay — are the more romantic setting, and the island-hopping day to the Hong islands is the best in Thailand. Phuket wins if you want restaurants and a bit of nightlife as well; Mai Khao and Kamala give you calm on an island that also has Patong when you want it.
Phuket. More resorts with kids' clubs and big pools, direct flights so no connection with children, the aquarium and the elephant sanctuaries, and calmer beaches at Karon, Kata and Mai Khao. Krabi works for families with older children who want boats and climbing.
There are no non-stop flights. Either fly to Bangkok and connect to Krabi (about 80 minutes), or fly non-stop to Phuket and transfer by road — around three hours to Ao Nang — or by boat in season. For a combined trip, do Phuket first and Krabi second so the long transfer is mid-holiday rather than on arrival day.
The south-west monsoon, roughly May to October: rain most afternoons, red flags on the beaches and island trips cancelled. Rates are low and it's fine for a pool-and-spa break, but not for the beach holiday most people are booking. November to April is the season; Christmas to mid-January is the peak.
Yes — seven to eight nights splits well as four in Phuket and three in Krabi, with the road transfer between them. Under seven nights, pick one; the transfer eats most of a day.
