Speedboat or seaplane? — the Maldives decision that sets the budget

Every Maldives resort is its own island, and how you reach it is the second-biggest cost of the trip after the room. Speedboat resorts near Malé are cheaper and quicker to reach; seaplane resorts in the far atolls are the postcard. Pick the transfer first, then the resort.

Why the transfer comes first

The Maldives is 1,200 islands in a line 800 km long, and the international airport is on one of them, beside Malé. Every resort is its own island, and the only question that matters before you look at rooms is: how far from the airport, and by what?

  • Speedboat — resorts in North and South Malé Atoll. Fifteen to sixty minutes, any hour of the day or night, the boat meets your flight. Priced per person but modestly.
  • Seaplane — resorts in Ari, Baa and Raa atolls and beyond. Twenty-five to fifty-five minutes of the best view you’ll ever have from a window seat. Daylight only, a luggage limit of roughly 20–25 kg a person, and priced per person at a level that can rival the airfare from India.
  • Domestic flight plus speedboat — the far north and south. A 45-to-75-minute flight to a regional airport, then a boat. Cheaper than a seaplane, works after dark, takes longer.

Our Maldives page says it plainly: the transfer is not a detail, it is the second-biggest cost. Decide it first.

Speedboat resorts: North and South Malé Atoll

The resorts here are the ones we book most for Indian travellers, because the arithmetic works: a three-hour flight, a thirty-minute boat, and the villa you wanted. Taj Exotica and Anantara Dhigu in South Malé Atoll, Velassaru for a honeymoon, Kurumba and Sheraton Full Moon for families in North Malé Atoll, Jumeirah Olhahali and Hilton Amingiri for the newer luxury. You give up a little seclusion — the atoll is busier — and nothing else.

Seaplane resorts: Ari, Baa and Raa

This is the Maldives of the photographs: Conrad Rangali with its underwater restaurant, W Maldives, Constance Halaveli and the Westin Miriandhoo and Vakkaru in the Baa Atoll UNESCO reserve, where the manta rays are. Quieter lagoons, bigger house reefs, and the seaplane itself. The cost is the transfer, the daylight rule, and the luggage limit — honeymooners with one bag each manage it; families with three suitcases and a pram don’t enjoy it.

What it costs in days

Two rules from our Maldives page worth repeating: half-board is usually right, all-inclusive sometimes, room-only almost never; and an overwater villa for two nights and a beach villa for the rest beats five nights over the water on most budgets.

Common questions

Distance from Malé. Resorts in North and South Malé Atoll are reached by speedboat in 15 to 60 minutes, at any hour, for a fraction of the cost. Resorts in Ari, Baa and Raa atolls need a seaplane — 25 to 55 minutes, daylight only, with a luggage limit — and the transfer is priced per person, often several hundred dollars return.

If the budget stretches, a seaplane resort — the flight over the atolls is part of the honeymoon, and the far-atoll islands are quieter. If it doesn't, the best South Malé Atoll resorts — Taj Exotica, Anantara Dhigu, Velassaru — give you the same overwater villa with the money saved on the transfer going into the room.

Speedboat. No daylight-only constraint, no luggage limit, no seaplane noise, and a 30-minute boat is easier with a small child than a 50-minute flight after a 3-hour one. North Malé Atoll — Kurumba, Sheraton Full Moon, Taj Coral Reef — has the family resorts.

You spend the first night in Malé or at an airport-island hotel and fly out in the morning — seaplanes don't operate after sunset. Evening arrivals from India are common, so for a short trip this can cost you a night. We check the landing time against the transfer before suggesting a resort.

Yes, in two ways: a speedboat resort in the monsoon months (May–October), when rates fall 30–50% and showers pass quickly; or a guesthouse on a local island such as Maafushi, with day trips to resort beaches. Local islands are alcohol-free and more conservative; we'll say so when we quote.
