Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi or Penang? — how to split a Malaysia trip

Malaysia is the easiest Southeast Asian trip to plan from India — visa-free, five hours away, Indian food on every corner — and the only decision is the split. The city, the beach island and the food town are an hour's flight apart; most trips should take two of them.

The three Malaysias

Kuala Lumpur — the city. The Petronas Towers and KLCC, Bukit Bintang’s malls and street food, Batu Caves, and Brickfields for the Indian food. Three nights is right. Stay at KLCC or Bukit Bintang — Mandarin Oriental, Grand Hyatt, Shangri-La, JW Marriott, the Ritz-Carlton at the top; Traders, Pullman and the Westin a notch down — or at KL Sentral if the trip is business and the train to the airport matters.

Langkawi — the beach island. An hour’s flight north-west. Datai Bay for the rainforest-meets-sea resorts — the Datai and the Ritz-Carlton; Tanjung Rhu for the Four Seasons; Pantai Cenang for the beach-town hotels at a lower rate. Duty-free, so the drinks are cheap; the sky bridge and cable car are the one day out. Three or four nights.

Penang — the food town. An hour’s flight north. George Town’s heritage streets, the hawker centres, Gurney Drive, the Eastern & Oriental Hotel for the old colonial Penang, Batu Ferringhi’s beach resorts — Shangri-La Rasa Sayang, Hard Rock, DoubleTree — for the family half. Two or three nights.

Genting Highlands — the extra. One night with children, a day trip without.

Splits that work

First visit, couple or friends6–73 Kuala Lumpur + 3–4 Langkawi
Family with children6–73 KL + 1 Genting + 3 Langkawi (Pantai Cenang or Pelangi)
Food and heritage63 KL + 3 Penang
Honeymoon6–72 KL + 4–5 Langkawi (Datai Bay or Tanjung Rhu)
All three9–103 KL + 3 Penang + 3–4 Langkawi, flying Penang → Langkawi direct

Fly India → Kuala Lumpur, take the domestic hop to the island or the town, and fly home from KL — or, for the all-three trip, Penang to Langkawi is a 35-minute flight and the loop closes neatly.

Practical

  • Visa-free, with the card. Fill the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card within three days of flying; immigration asks for it. The visa-free window runs to 31 December 2026 as of writing — we’ll say if that changes.
  • Weather. Fine all year on the west coast, where all three stops are. December to March is driest. The east-coast islands — Redang, Perhentian — close for the monsoon from November to February; they’re a different trip.
  • Getting around. Grab in the cities; the KLIA Ekspres train from the airport to KL Sentral in half an hour; a car and driver in Langkawi, where distances are small and taxis fixed-fare.
  • Money. The ringgit sits around ₹19–20. Cards everywhere; cash for hawker stalls.

Tell us who’s travelling and your dates and we’ll send the split with two hotels per stop, the domestic flights, the MDAC reminder and one INR invoice with GST.

FAQ

Common questions

Six to seven for two stops — three in Kuala Lumpur and three or four in Langkawi or Penang. Five works for KL plus Genting with children. Nine or ten lets you do all three; more than that and you're better adding Singapore across the causeway.

Langkawi for the beach: the resorts at Datai Bay and Tanjung Rhu are among the best in Asia, the island is duty-free, and there's the cable car and sky bridge. Penang for the food and the town: George Town's heritage streets and the best street food in the region, with Batu Ferringhi beach as the add-on. Honeymoons and families lean Langkawi; food-led couples and older travellers lean Penang.

One night with children, a day trip without. It's an hour from Kuala Lumpur by road or cable car, cool, with a theme park and a casino. Resorts World's hotels range from First World at the budget end to Crockfords at the top; we'd stay in KL and go up for the day unless the children insist.

Not at present — Indian passport holders enter visa-free for up to 30 days, extended through 31 December 2026. You must fill the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online within three days of travel and carry the return ticket and hotel confirmation. We send the MDAC link with the booking.

Easier than almost anywhere outside India — Malaysia's Indian community is large, and Brickfields in KL and Little India in George Town are full of South and North Indian restaurants. Vegetarian is simple; most resorts handle Jain requests with notice.
