How to reach Goa — every route that works
Every route into Goa that actually works — which airport to book, which trains are worth it, which drive routes to avoid, and how to get around once you land.
Goa now has two airports. Which one to fly into matters.
Dabolim (GOI) — South Goa airport
The original Goa airport, in South Goa near Vasco. Closer to South Goa beaches (Cavelossim, Varca, Palolem, Agonda). About 60–90 minutes by cab to North Goa (Baga, Anjuna, Vagator, Ashwem).
- Airlines: IndiGo, Air India, Vistara, SpiceJet, Akasa — all major carriers.
- Direct flights from: Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Goa itself (interline connections).
- To your hotel: Pre-paid cab counters inside terminal. Cab to Baga/Calangute (60 min): prepaid rates posted at counter. Cab to Palolem (60 min): prepaid rates posted at counter.
Mopa (GOX) — North Goa airport
New international airport opened January 2023. In North Goa near Pernem — closer to Ashwem, Morjim, Anjuna. About 25–40 min to popular North Goa beaches. About 90–120 min to South Goa (avoid this combo).
- Airlines: Currently more limited than Dabolim. IndiGo, Air India, Vistara have most flights. International arrivals from Middle East, some Southeast Asia.
- Direct flights from: Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad (schedule expanding monthly — check current routes).
- To your hotel: Pre-paid cab or app-cab. Cab to Ashwem/Morjim (25 min): prepaid rates posted at counter. Cab to Baga/Calangute (50 min): prepaid rates posted at counter.
Which airport should you book?
- Staying in North Goa: Mopa (GOX) if flights available — saves 45+ min of driving. Else Dabolim.
- Staying in South Goa: Dabolim (GOI) always. Mopa to South Goa is a long drive.
- Cheapest fare wins: If Mopa fares are meaningfully cheaper for a North Goa trip, that’s roughly your cab-saving anyway — balances out.

Konkan Railway serves Goa, and for travellers from Mumbai and points north, an overnight train is a legitimate alternative to flying — especially in peak season when airfares spike.
Three main stations in Goa
- Madgaon (MAO) — South Goa’s main station. Most trains stop here. Best for staying South Goa. 30 min to Palolem, 45 min to Cavelossim.
- Vasco da Gama (VSG) — near Dabolim airport. Fewer trains stop here. Best if flying home from Dabolim after.
- Thivim (THVM) — small station in North Goa, close to Mapusa. Best for staying Anjuna, Vagator, Baga — 25–40 min drive to those beaches.
Best trains worth booking
- Mumbai to Goa: Konkan Kanya Express (11099) — overnight, arrives Madgaon 10:30 AM. Reliable, popular. Book 2AC or 3AC..
- Mumbai to Goa (fast): Tejas Express — day train, 8–9 hours. Modern coaches, catering included..
- Bengaluru to Goa: Vasco Express or Amaravathi Express. Overnight..
- Delhi to Goa: Rajdhani via Mumbai — not direct. Roughly 30 hours. Fly instead unless you specifically want the train experience.
Book 60+ days in advance for peak season (Dec-Feb) — trains fill up fast. Off-season, tatkal or same-week booking usually works.
Driving to Goa is a legitimate option from a few source cities. Beyond that, fly.
Mumbai to Goa — 8 to 12 hours
Route: Mumbai → Pune → Kolhapur → Amboli / Sindhudurg → Goa via NH66. About 590 km. In good conditions, 10 hours with two food stops.
Best drives are November through February when road conditions are dry. Monsoon (Jun–Sep) makes the Amboli Ghat section unpredictable — landslides happen. If you must drive in monsoon, take the longer coastal route via Ratnagiri.
Overnight breaks worth considering: Kolhapur (halfway), Sindhudurg beaches (Tarkarli, Malvan — add a day). Turns a 10-hour drive into a 2-day road trip.
Pune to Goa — 8 to 10 hours
Route: Pune → Kolhapur → Amboli → Goa. About 445 km. Same warnings on monsoon apply.
This is the most-driven route because Pune to Goa Konkan drive is genuinely scenic — ghats, sea views on approach. Many Pune weekenders do this. We arrange self-drive rentals for these trips if you want — Zoomcar, Revv, or private drivers.
Bengaluru to Goa — 9 to 12 hours
Route: Bengaluru → Hubli → Karwar → Goa via NH48 + NH66. About 560 km. Straightforward drive on decent roads except Hubli-Karwar section which can be slow.
Overnight in Karwar or continue direct. Coming back to Bengaluru from Goa on a Sunday evening is punishing — leave early or take a Monday morning flight instead.
Delhi to Goa — 2 days minimum, do not do this
1,900 km. Two long driving days minimum, four if you enjoy the journey. Only makes sense if you’re doing a road trip as part of a longer plan (Delhi → Rajasthan → Gujarat → Goa over 10 days). Otherwise fly.
Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata to Goa — fly
Roads are decent but distances (~700–2,000 km) make driving impractical. Fly.
Rented scooter — the classic Goa move
Renting a scooter is how most travellers get around Goa — especially North Goa where beaches, cafes, and villages are 5–15 minutes apart on quiet roads. Rentals range a small daily rate for a Honda Activa. Petrol is your cost extra. Helmets provided (wear them — police checks).
Where to rent: Every guesthouse and hotel arranges scooters. You can also book through Royal Brothers or Onn Bikes online.
Requirements: Valid driving license (Indian or International Permit). Passport copy. Cash deposit (a modest amount). Return with same fuel level.
Rented car — for families & longer distances
Self-drive cars available from Zoomcar, Revv, and local operators. About a mid-range daily rate for a hatchback (Swift, i10). Sedan or SUV higher. Better for families with kids or if you plan to move between North and South Goa.
Taxis & app cabs
Uber and Ola work in Goa but availability is patchy in beach areas — wait times can be 15–30 min. Local prepaid taxi stands work at popular beaches and hotels. For airport pickup and drop, always prebook (either your hotel arranges, or we do it for you).
Rough fares: Baga to Panjim a short-hop fare, Palolem to Dabolim a longer prepaid fare, North Goa to South Goa a cross-Goa fare.
Buses
Kadamba (Goa state transport) buses connect major towns. Very cheap (a nominal fare) but not oriented at tourists. Only makes sense for very budget travellers or specific point-to-point routes (e.g., Panjim to Madgaon).
Rented bicycle
Popular in South Goa quieter stretches (Palolem, Agonda). a small daily rate. Only viable in cooler months — too hot in April-May.

- Airport drop: Same as above, in reverse. Especially useful for early morning departures (5–7 AM) when app cabs are unreliable.
- Self-drive rental: Zoomcar, Revv, or trusted local operators booked on your behalf. Delivery to your hotel.
- Full-day cab hire: If you don’t want to ride scooter and want to do a North-to-South Goa exploration day. a mid-range day-rate with driver depending on kilometres.
- Multi-city / drop-back trips: e.g., Goa → Sindhudurg → Mumbai over 2 days. We coordinate the driver and stops.
What we don’t handle
- Scooter rentals: Best done directly at your hotel — local rental market works well without us as middleman.
- Bus tickets: Kadamba local buses aren’t worth booking through us. Just show up at bus stand.
- Train ticket booking: IRCTC works fine directly — we don’t add value here.

Mopa (GOX) if flight schedule and fare are comparable — it’s 45+ minutes closer to Anjuna, Ashwem, Morjim. If Mopa flights are meaningfully pricier, that eats the cab savings. Currently Mopa has fewer flight options than Dabolim so schedule flexibility matters. Check both when booking.
Yes, in the November-to-February window. The NH66 through Amboli Ghat is scenic and generally in good condition. Avoid driving in monsoon (Jun-Sep) — landslides on the ghat section, poor visibility, slippery roads. Also avoid overnight driving on this route — the ghat sections are winding.
Yes but it’s a proper 60–90 minute drive, not a casual hop. Most travellers pick one side and stay there. If you want both, plan 3 nights each and take one full transit day. Cab between the two: a cross-Goa fare. Better to see it as one journey per trip.
Indian residents just need a valid Indian driving licence with two-wheeler endorsement. International visitors need an International Driving Permit (IDP) — not just their home country licence. Some rental places are casual about this; police checks are stricter and can fine you if you don’t have the right documents.
Sleeper class train (Konkan Kanya, Mandovi Express) at the lowest fare tier — if you can handle the discomfort. 2AC train at a mid-range fare is much more comfortable and still cheaper than most flights during peak. Off-peak (Jun-Oct), flights can drop to a cross-Goa fare — then flying is cheapest and fastest.
