Colombo for a business trip — where to stay, and how the city works
Colombo is the shortest international business trip an Indian company can make: ninety minutes from Chennai, no time difference, a free visa, and a business district you can cover on foot. The one thing to get right is which Colombo number your meetings are in.
Colombo by the numbers
Colombo’s districts are numbered, and the numbers are how offices give their addresses. For a business trip, four of them matter:

From Galle Face to Fort is a ten-minute drive; to Colombo 7, fifteen. Nothing in the business district is far from anything else.
Where to stay
Galle Face, for most trips. The row of hotels along the seafront — Shangri-La, Taj Samudra, the Galle Face Hotel, ITC Ratnadipa — is the default for a reason: ten minutes from Fort, walking distance to the Galle Road offices, and a sea view in the evening. Taj Samudra and ITC Ratnadipa are the natural picks for Indian companies; Shangri-La for the senior visitor; the Galle Face Hotel when you want the old Colombo.
Fort, for Port City and the banks. Hilton Colombo at Echelon Square puts the World Trade Centre and the Port City offices on foot. Granbell is the modern mid-range option in the same district.
Kollupitiya and Union Place, for value and longer stays. Cinnamon Grand and Cinnamon Lakeside for full-service at a lower rate than the seafront; Cinnamon Red for a short, efficient trip; Hilton Colombo Residences on Union Place for a week or more with a kitchen.
The day
- Arrive. Immigration is quick with the ETA approval on your phone. The expressway run to the city is 45–60 minutes; the hotel car is worth it after a late flight.
- Meetings. Taxis and ride apps are cheap and reliable; traffic on Galle Road peaks 8–9:30 AM and 5–7 PM. Walk where you can — the business district is compact and the seafront path is pleasant.
- Dinner. Ministry of Crab, the Galle Face Hotel’s verandah, or the hotel’s own restaurants — all handle vegetarian requests easily. Sri Lankan food is close enough to South Indian to be no trouble.
- Leave. Allow the full hour to the airport in the evening peak.
Making the trip pay
- Add a weekend. Galle is two hours down the Southern Expressway; the hills — Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella — three to five. A Thursday–Friday of meetings and a weekend away is the most common Colombo pattern we book. See Sri Lanka hotels for the south coast and hill picks.
- Groups and offsites. For 10 or more rooms, or a team offsite on the coast, we collect quotes and manage the rooming list as we do in India.
- Invoicing. The hotel bills in LKR or USD; we add our INR invoice with GST on our service so finance has something that fits. Say so at booking.

Indian tourists and business visitors get an Electronic Travel Authorisation free of charge, but it is still mandatory — apply at eta.gov.lk before you fly and carry the approval. Thirty days' stay. We send the link and a checklist with the hotel confirmation.
About 35 km north at Katunayake. The Colombo–Katunayake Expressway makes it 45 to 60 minutes to Fort or Galle Face; without it, longer. We arrange the hotel car or a prepaid taxi with the booking.
