Bali for a honeymoon — where to stay, and how to split the week

Bali is the honeymoon most Indian couples picture, and the mistake most make is booking one resort for seven nights. The island has four different honeymoons on it — cliff, beach, village and rice terrace — and the good trips take two or three of them.

The four Balis

The cliffs — Uluwatu and Jimbaran. The south-western peninsula, where the resorts sit on limestone cliffs above the Indian Ocean. The Four Seasons at Jimbaran Bay and AYANA are the famous ones; the seafood dinners on Jimbaran beach are the evening. This is the honeymoon of the sunset photographs, and it is the most secluded — you’ll need a car to go anywhere.

The beach and the scene — Seminyak and Canggu. Beach clubs, restaurants, boutiques and the pool-villa resorts behind their walls: the Legian, Alila Seminyak, W Bali, COMO Uma Canggu. The social honeymoon. Canggu is younger and surfier; Seminyak is the more polished.

The resort beach — Nusa Dua and Tanjung Benoa. A gated enclave of large resorts on a calm, swimmable beach: the St. Regis, Grand Hyatt, the Westin, Sofitel, Conrad. Everything on site, no decisions, a kids’ club you won’t need. The right first stop after a long flight, and the right choice for couples who want calm.

The village — Ubud. Inland, among the rice terraces and the temples. Spa resorts in the river valleys, cooking classes, the monkey forest, a different Bali from the coast. Two nights is the minimum; three if you’re spa people.

Seven nights that work

NightsWhereWhy
1–3Nusa Dua or JimbaranArrive, recover from the flight, beach and pool
4–5UbudRice terraces, spa, the temples
6–7Seminyak or UluwatuEnd on the coast — beach clubs or cliff sunsets

Or, with fewer moves: four nights on the coast (Nusa Dua or Uluwatu) and three in Ubud. Our Bali page’s rule holds: nobody should spend seven nights in one Bali hotel. The transfers between areas are 45 to 90 minutes, and we arrange them with the booking.

Practical

  • Flights. Non-stop from Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru, six to seven hours; via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, eight to ten with the connection. Bali is 2.5 hours ahead of IST.
  • Visa and levy. Visa on arrival, IDR 500,000; tourist levy IDR 150,000 paid online before landing. Keep both QR codes on your phone.
  • Season. April to October is dry; July and August are the busiest. December to February is wet — afternoon rain, warm, cheaper — and fine for a spa-led trip.
  • Money. The rupiah runs about 190 to the rupee, so prices look enormous and aren’t. Cards work at resorts and restaurants; carry cash for the villages.
  • Private pool villas. Bali’s speciality and worth it for at least part of the trip — tell us which nights.

Tell us your dates, the kind of couple you are and the budget, and we’ll send a split itinerary with two or three resorts per stop, the transfers between them, the visa and levy checklist, and one INR invoice with GST.

Common questions

It depends on the couple. Uluwatu and Jimbaran for cliffs, sunsets and seclusion; Seminyak for beach clubs, restaurants and a social evening; Nusa Dua for a calm, resort-style beach with everything on site; Ubud for the rice terraces, the spa days and the Bali of the films. Most couples do two of these; the best trips do three.

Seven is right. Three on the coast, two in Ubud, two somewhere different — or four and three if you want fewer moves. Five works for a short honeymoon if you keep to two bases. Ten is lovely but only if you add Lombok or the Gili islands.

Visa on arrival — IDR 500,000, about US$35 a person, for 30 days, extendable once. Pay the Bali tourist levy of IDR 150,000 online before you land and keep the QR code. The arrival queue is the least romantic part of the trip; the visa itself is simple.

Easy for vegetarians — Indonesian and Balinese food has a lot of tofu, tempeh and vegetable dishes, and every resort handles it. Jain food needs planning: tell us and we'll pick hotels with experience of it, and book a villa with a kitchen for part of the stay.

Nusa Dua if your idea of romance is a private beach, a resort you never need to leave and dinner on the sand; Seminyak if it's sunset at a beach club, a different restaurant every night and a villa with a private pool behind a wall. Neither is wrong; they're different weeks.

Tell us what you need. We’ll handle the rest.
